vs. Colby College
VIERA, Fla. – The Carleton College softball team extended its win streak to six games after defeating Webster University, 5-3, and Dallas Christian College, 2-1. The Knights improved to 5-0 this season in games decided by two runs or less.
“It was another solid day for the team,” said Carleton head coach Amy Erickson. “We came out with a lot of energy and fight. She had some smart aggressive baserunning along with executing when we needed.”
Carleton 5, Webster 3
Things got off on the wrong foot for the Knights as Webster’s leadoff hitter Isabelle Loiben opened the game with a home run, but Carleton settled in after that initial hiccup.
Carleton (8-2) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning as Megan Smith tripled to centerfield with two down and came home via a wild pitch.
The Knights took the lead with three runs in the fourth frame. Adriana Wiggins and Grace Colburn started the rally with consecutive singles. The first of the runs came across on a grounder that Webster turned into an error. Livi Peters and Natasha Paez followed with RBI singles to give Carleton a 4-1 advantage.
Smith drove home the final Knights’ run with a two-out hit in the sixth inning.
The Gorlocks (7-13) made things interesting with a late rally, plating a pair of two-out tallies in the seventh inning before reliever Rachel Block registered the final out with the bases loaded.
Becca Madsen (2-0) got the starting nod and permitted one run on three hits and no walks over 4.0 innings. Block worked the final 3.0 frames for her second save of the season.
Smith and Wiggins led the Carleton offense with two hits apiece.
Carleton 2, Dallas Christian 1
Carleton plated a two-out run in the second inning as Jade Thach singled, advanced on a groundout, and scored on Esme Song’s single to right field.
Carleton doubled its lead thanks to aggressive baserunning in the third inning. Samantha Rodriguez singled and advanced on an error by the left fielder. She tagged up and moved up on a foul out to first base before scoring on a pop out to second base, a play that officially goes down as a sacrifice fly.
That was all the run support Sydney Trentman (5-0) would require as the righthander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Crusaders (14-14) avoided becoming a historical footnote when Kaylee Brent singled to begin the bottom of the sixth, but Trentman put another zero on the scoreboard.
A Carleton error in the bottom of the seventh led to an unearned run, but Trentman fanned Brent to end the game.
Trentman’s pitching line included only two hits and a walk against seven strikeouts as she tossed her third complete game of the campaign. She lowered her season ERA to a miniscule 0.19, best among MIAC players so far this year.
Emily Vogel, Thach, and Song had two hits apiece to pace the Knights.
Up Next for the Knights
