BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Special Olympics Texas East Region Area 6 Spring Games are coming to the Phillips Event Center on March 28-29, and organizers are looking for volunteers to help make it happen.

Co-coordinator Randi Daniel says this year marks a milestone — the 10th year the event has been held locally. More than 500 athletes from Conroe, The Woodlands, Willis, Brenham and surrounding communities are expected to compete in track and field, cycling, fundamentals and tennis.

“It’s going to be a huge weekend,” Daniel said.

Among the competitors is Jacob Zapalac of Bryan, a veteran Special Olympics athlete who says the friendships he’s built keep him coming back year after year. He competes with his team, the Road Rascals, and has his first cycling race at the games.

“I am wishing myself the best of luck for my first place,” Zapalac said.

How to volunteer

Daniel says volunteers are needed for a wide range of tasks — from making lunches and running race timers to counting cycling laps and cheering at the finish line.
