History
CLERMONT, Fla. | The Farmingdale State College softball team’s spring break trip well underway, as the Rams have split their six contests over the first three days of competition.
FSC captured a 3-1 victory over SUNY Fredonia in a game that began Monday afternoon and resumed 48 hours later due to thunderstorms hitting the central Florida area, as well wins wins against William Paterson (4-3) and Clarkson (7-6) on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The Rams’ three defeats came in Monday’s season opener versus McDaniel (9-4), Tuesday by a 4-3 margin against Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Wednesday to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 9-1.
Senior designated player Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) has batted .421 (8-for-19) with one double across the first six games, and is tied for the team lead with three runs batted in, along with junior catcher Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Emily Lopez (Miller Place, N.Y.). Junior outfielder Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) has crossed the plate a team-high five times with four stolen bases, while senior right-hander Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) has compiled a 3-1 record in the pitcher’s circle with 14 strikeouts across 21 innings pitched.
In the victory against Fredonia, junior outfielder Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored on an infield error in the bottom of the second inning to open the FSC account. After Fredonia leveled the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Sturtz and Stolfi registered RBI singles to score sophomore Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) and Toro, respectively.
The Rams’ one-run triumph against William Paterson, DeMaio (CG, 4 K) helped her cause with a two-RBI outing at the plate, including a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth frame to plate Toro (1-for-3) with the eventual game-winning run. Lopez (RBI) and Marchini both went 2-for-3 at the dish.
Farmingdale State used a five-run top of the third inning against Clarkson to move ahead by a pair of runs, led by a two-run single by sophomore Alexandra Pole (Rocky Point, N.Y.), along with one-run singles by junior Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.), Sturtz (3-for-4) and Lopez. Clarkson led by a 6-5 count after six innings of play, before the Rams responded with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the seventh to pull ahead for good. After Stolfi (2-for-3) knotted the game at 6-all with a single up the middle to score Toro (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB), Sturtz laced a single to right-center field to plate Hammock with the go-ahead run.
After an off day on Thursday, FSC has single contests Friday afternoon against Buffalo State (1:45 p.m.) and Framingham State (4 p.m.), before rounding out its trip with Saturday games versus Simpson (10 a.m.) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (12:15 p.m.).
