Mai and Ed alone make up over 25% of all the fighters being played

There’s $1 million at stake this week with Capcom Cup 12 already underway and looking to crown a new Street Fighter 6 champion.

With the first day of action complete, we’ve put together a character breakdown for the top 48 players as well as those who’ve qualified for the top 16 finals with some interesting results.

Overall, there’s been a pretty decent spread among fighter representation with 21 of 28 characters seeing play so far, but a couple of outliers are showing up much more frequently than the rest.

Combined together, Mai Shiranui and Ed account for 27% of the total Capcom Cup competitors though only one of them has carried over that success to the finals stage so far.

We’ve seen 13 repeat picks across the board with Rashid, Ken, JP, M. Bison and interestingly, Guile having strong showings in the preliminary stage too.

While he was one of the biggest threats last year, Bison is now being chosen more as a secondary fighter over the main slot here in Season 3.

As for those left on the sidelines, Chun-Li, Marisa, A.K.I., Manon, E. Honda, Jamie and Lily are the only ones that haven’t seen any representation yet.

It appears Capcom is still struggling to make the newcomer cast of Street Fighter 6 relevant in the current meta since Kimberly is the sole inclusion here (not including the SNK guests).

Seeing some of the newer characters like C. Viper, Elena and Sagat has also been nice, and no one is out of the running for the championship just yet.

You can find our top 48 breakdown for Capcom Cup 12 below followed by those who’ve made it to the final stage.

After the first day, 12 players have advanced to the top 16, which means 36 competitors are still playing their hearts out for those last 4 remaining spots.

From who’s qualified so far, there is a clear standout character that is head and shoulders above everyone else as a massive threat.

It seems Japan was right about Ed’s strength in SF6 right now considering 5 out of the 6 boxers made it out of their groups, which accounts for almost half of the top 12.

The only other repeat picks that advanced to the finals are Rashid and Mai, so Ms. Shiranui’s early representation has not translated to as much success as Ed boy.

To round out everyone else, 2G|Blaz’s Sagat, Zeta|Higuchi’s Guile and DFM|Itabashi Zangief’s namesake are all awaiting their shot at the massive prize too.

This means we have 6 different mains in the top 12 after the first round with half of them being used by more than one player.

Another interesting note is there’s no traditional Shotos in the finals thus far despite Ryu’s apparent strength and Ken plus Akuma having multiple players in the running.
