MOBILE, Ala. – The Samford softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday at the Jaguar Classic, falling 9-1 to Mississippi State and 4-1 to South Alabama. With the two losses, the Bulldogs’ season record moves to 9-16.
In the first game, Mississippi State took control early. They plated three runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a Samford error and a wild pitch. The game was broken open in the fourth inning when Mississippi State scored five more runs, highlighted by a four-run home run, to extend its lead to 8-0. Starting pitcher Sara Bond took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Samford’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Addison Smith hit a solo home run, her first of the season. It was the only hit of the game for the Bulldogs, which concluded after five innings due to the run rule. Reese Hickey pitched one and two-thirds innings in relief, striking out two.
The second game against host South Alabama was tight early, before Samford struck first in the top of the third inning. After Brandy Phillips led off with a walk, she later scored on an RBI single from Katie Campbell to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
South Alabama answered in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead. The Jaguars added two insurance runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to secure the 4-1 victory. Samford managed five hits but left seven runners on base. Olivia Treece lasted four innings, allowing three hits and three runs and was credited with the loss.
The Bulldogs were limited to six hits on the day against Mississippi State and South Alabama. Samford is back in action tomorrow as they wrap up against New Mexico at 10 a.m.
