Fighting games are a super serious business, except the large amount of times that they aren’t when the developers and players have a little goofy fun with the absurdity on display.
Capcom themselves even leaned into the memes this week with Alex’s character guide showcase for Street Fighter 6.
The English written descriptions for Alex’s various moves and specials were styled to reflect the character’s New York origins and wrestling persona, but there was one line that stood out in particular.
And anyone who’s spent many years on the internet probably instantly picked up on what they were putting down.
“This heavy duty lariat’s got invincibility on it, and the dash
goes through projectiles, giving you a 159 2/3% chance of dealing unheard-of pain to their whole existence,” reads Capcom’s description for Alex’s Sledgecross Hammer Super.
That is of course a direct reference to Scott Steiner’s iconic / infamous TNA Sacrifice promo from 2008 where his calculations gave him a 141 2/3 chance of winning against Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle.
“Steiner Math” has persisted as one of the biggest memes in pro wrestling history, and now it’s found it’s way into Street Fighter.
You could certainly describe Alex as a “Genetic Freak” considering his build and the way his legs were on backwards in Street Fighter 5.
This does fit in considering Capcom is leaning harder into Alex’s wrestling persona than ever before by going so far as to make him a straight up heel while he’s in a fight.
That’s even further backed up by longtime Alex superfan and AEW star Kenny Omega providing some of the motion capture for the new DLC character, and Alex’s special level 2 Super is just one big reference to Omega’s signature move too.
It’s also pretty clear that there’s some big wrestling fans among the Street Fighter team, including the Director himself.
Takayuki Nakayama recently responded to a social media post with his top nine wrestlers “who made him” that included in order Diamond Dallas Page, Adrian Street, Kenny Omega, Booker T (Harlem Heat era), Cibernético (LLL era), Abismo Negro, Penta (Pentagón Jr era), Randy Savage and Tommy Dreamer — so the dude definitely knows his stuff.

Capcom has of course brought memes and inside jokes into their fighting games before considering the famous singular photo from Elena’s Ultra Street Fighter 4 ending with Akuma was made into a canon part of her story in Street Fighter 6 — and there’s plenty more to be found in the game too in places like the World Tour mode.
Some could say they leaned into the memes about Alex’s giant lariat in Street Fighter 5 too from how many times they buffed the attack over the years, and now it can have armor in Street Fighter 6.
We’ll have to see how many wrestling references they squeezed into Alex here in less than two weeks when he launches on March 17.
He’ll also be joined by Outfit 4 DLC for Elena and Dee Jay as well as a new balance update for Street Fighter 6.
