TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Since 1963, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Arizona has been helping our community, and now it’s asking for help in return.
There are kids in Tucson looking for a mentor.
All this week, we’ve been introducing you to Bigs and Littles who’ve connected and the positive impact they’re having on each other.
Today, we meet Corey and Max.
When we caught up with Max and Corey, they were enjoying all the games at the Big Brothers Big Sisters activity center, but their adventures go well beyond these walls.
“We love disc golf, we play a lot of disc golf, being outdoors, sports, Max is a really good athlete, soccer, basketball,” Corey said.
“We just love the same stuff, like going out, movies, sushi, disc golf, it’s so fun,” Max said.
After all those outdoor activities, sitting down for a good meal is also one of their favorite pastimes.
“We’re kind of foodies here in Tucson,” Corey said. “We love to go around and check out all the new spots. Sushi is kind of our thing right now. We’ve been eating a lot of sushi.”
“Love sushi, yeah (smiles),” Max said.
Corey said that, as a former paramedic, he was looking for another way to give back to his community and called Big Brothers Big Sisters at the urging of a friend.
“It was a great decision. I called the folks over here, and they got me plugged in and hooked up with Max, and it’s been over two years now, and it’s a really good experience,” Corey said.
Despite some first-day jitters, both said Big Brothers Big Sisters did a phenomenal job of matching them together.
“There was a little bit of nervousness at first meeting Max and his parents, but after we got to know each other a little bit, it’s just like we’re old friends, like we’ve known each other our whole lives,” Corey said.
“Having someone to talk to, anywhere, anytime, is the most important thing, especially with mental health is important, I’d say. Having a friend there for you is really important,” Max said.
Corey and Max encourage others to follow their lead and get involved.
“Since I’m with Corey a lot, I can see the impact he has on me; I feel like it can have an impact on someone else,” Max said.
“It’s very rewarding. It’s something that will pay off long term as far as contributing to our community, and it’s great to be a part of something that’s bigger than yourself,” Corey said.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters is awesome, man. Do it,” Corey said.
From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 13 News anchor Dan Marries will host a carwash to support the organization.
