Game Developer and Tech Artist Alpago Göktenay unveiled this eye-catching demo with realistic waves of wind flowing through grass set up with Unreal Engine 5.
The artist shared technical details of the setup, saying that it relies on stretched Perlin noise sampled in world space coordinates – an approach Göktenay notes is rarely seen despite its simplicity. He says that stretching the world coordinates before feeding them into the Perlin function is essential, as moving through the Perlin function too quickly causes the “wind passing through crops” illusion to break down and look unnatural.
