Victoria East swept on final day of home tourney; West, St. Joseph win both games Saturday

The Victoria Youth Sports Complex played host to the third and final day of the Victoria East Softball Tournament on Saturday.
The Victoria East Lady Titans dropped both games in Saturday’s tournament finale. They were on the losing end of a 11-1 five inning final against the Calhoun Lady Sandies in the first game of the day.
East scored their only run of the ballgame in the top half of the first before Calhoun reeled off 11 unanswered runs of their own. Calhoun scored the final run in the bottom of the fifth to enact the 10-run rule and end the contest.
Shortstop and leadoff hitter Rhaelyn Steen went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in the loss.
East wrapped up tournament play with a 4-2 setback in five innings against St. Joseph. Both teams posted two runs in the second inning before St. Joseph broke through with two more runs in the third to pull away. Back-to-back RBI singles from Ava Martinez and Shayne Meismer helped lift the Lady Flyers to victory.
Meismer was the winning pitcher. She did not allow an earned run on four hits through five innings. East’s Aniya Franklin suffered the loss and allowed two earned runs on three hits through five.

East wrapped up tournament action with a 2-3-1 record. Now 8-11-1 overall, the Lady Titans travel to Richmond Randle for Tuesday’s district opener. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
West takes both games Saturday
The Victoria Lady Warriors earned a pair of wins Saturday to wrap up tournament play with a record of 5-1.
West’s first victory was an 8-0 win over Beeville Jones in five innings. West needed just five hits to accumulate eight runs. Right fielder Madisyn Saenz went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Left fielder and leadoff hitter Elaiyna Martinez also went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. She also reached safely on a hit by pitch.
West’s Ella Cuellar pitched a complete game and surrendered just two hits in the shutout victory.
In the second game Saturday, West was a 2-0 winner over El Campo in seven innings. The Lady Warriors scored both of their runs in the second inning on consecutive at-bats. A sacrifice fly by Peyton Mikesh followed by an RBI single by Kristen Leuschner gave West the only runs of the contest.
Martinez tossed a complete game shutout for West, allowed five hits, struck out two, and did not issue a walk.
Now 12-9 overall, West opens district play Tuesday night at home against Fort Bend Kempner. Game time is set for 5.
Lady Flyers win five of six in tournament
Before the St. Joseph Lady Flyers earned a tournament-ending victory over Victoria East, they were 15-5 winners over Bay City in the first contest on Saturday. It was a six-inning affair.
Ahead 10-5 after five innings, St. Joseph rallied for five runs in the sixth to pull away. Center fielder Jazmyn Gamez batted third in the lineup and went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and a walk. Catcher Arianny Handy also enjoyed a prolific hitting performance from the eighth spot in the lineup. She went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored for St. Joseph.
Reliever Natalie Lill picked up the win and pitched three shutout innings. Lill allowed just one hit, struck out five, and did not issue a walk.
St. Joseph finished the tournament 5-1 and head into play Tuesday with an overall mark of 15-2. They will host the Bishop Lady Badgers at 6 p.m. in a non-district matchup.
