While we’re not reinventing the crossword, some rules that longtime solvers have become accustomed to will be broken. In crosswords, each grid is typically symmetrical. For example, if you flip the grid upside down, the black squares all go in the same spot. It’s an aesthetic choice that looks beautiful in print and signals to solvers where themes are. But online, we can use our technology to highlight theme answers and eliminate the need for symmetry. Allowing for asymmetrical grids opens up a lot more flexibility with each puzzle. And if it’s applicable to the theme, we’ll occasionally use two-letter words and repeating answers. We’re reinterpreting the rules of the crossword for the modern era.
