Sega’s Sakura Wars series celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, which means fans are reasonably eager to hear about new developments in the franchise. That might be why Kohei Tanaka, who’s written music for both the Sakura Wars game and anime series since 1996, recently provided a hint.

Writing on his personal X account on February 24, Tanaka says there is some kind of new development in the works as Sakura Wars commemorates its 30-year anniversary. He expects it to be formally announced in spring this year, but emphasizes that the new project is not a game.

This information came in response to a commotion Tanaka inadvertently caused, after a previous post in which he talked about “working on a major track” got misunderstood as referring to the Sakura Wars series. While he clarified that this specific post of his was not related to Sakura Wars, it seems like he is also involved in some in-the-works project related to the franchise.

While some Japanese commenters where disappointed that the upcoming announcement will not be a game, many were relieved to see that the series is still getting attention in the first place. As for what the new project may be, many are placing their bets on an anime or stage play, but this remains to be seen.

Tanaka was surprised to see the huge response his enigmatic tweet caused and glad to see that Sakura Wars is still so loved by fans, but said he won’t be providing any more hints until the official announcement is made.
