It’s been nearly 15 years since Mortal Kombat 9 was released. The game was largely successful due to its single player story mode. Ever since then, NetherRealm Studios has continued to follow the formula of creating fighting games that feature plenty of content for both the competitive crowd and casual fans.
Naturally, since each of the 16 story chapters would focus on a single character in a game that sported a base roster of 27 fighters, the story was biased in how it distributed its victories and losses. By tallying the wins and losses of each character, we can get an idea of which fighters were the most impactful in terms of what happened in the main story mode.
All characters that get story chapters within the story mode are going to at least get four victories under their belts. The story will be unable to continue without the player advancing through all four sections of each chapter.
However, it should be noted that some fighters are forced to fight against two opponents at once during some of their sections. Essentially, these are 2v1 fights that always put the player at a disadvantage. These will count as two victories for the winning character, while both losers will receive a loss.
Although Bi-Han and Kuai Liang both start out as Sub-Zero before switching to Noob Saibot and Cyber Sub-Zero respectively, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang are being counted as separate fighters.
Since there are story chapters dedicated to both versions of Kuai Liang as Sub-Zero and Cyber Sub-Zero, he naturally has a lot of victories under his belt.
Additionally, there’s a sequence in which Shang Tsung teams up with Reptile to take on Smoke. During this fight, Shang Tsung transforms into Sub-Zero. As the two inevitably lose to Smoke since the player is controlling him, this will count as a loss for Shang Tsung, not Bi-Han.
There are also a number of events that show characters winning and losing against one another that happen only in the cutscenes. For example, Ermac ends up obliterating Jax’s arms even though the two never actually fight in the story during gameplay. This counts as a win for Ermac and a loss for Jax.
We also hear Raiden talk about how Smoke was defeated during Shao Kahn’s tournament in an off-screen battle. Although this is being counted as a loss for Smoke, it’s the only instance of a character losing without a winner to attribute a point to.
In the end, Raiden, Sindel, Kuai Liang and Liu Kang end up securing the highest number of wins. Meanwhile, Bi-Han, Johnny Cage and Quan Chi end up being on the receiving ends of the most beatdowns. Funnily enough, Bi-Han is the only character that ends up dying twice in the main story mode.
The infamous encounter against Sindel ended up counting a lot of wins for her in just a single cutscene. Sindel’s warpath ultimately ended with both her and Nightwolf killing each other, resulting in a draw. This counts as a win and loss for both Sindel and Nightwolf.
