With God of War Ragnarok bringing the Norse saga to an end for Kratos and Atreus, the next entry in the series by Santa Monica Studio is set to feature a completely different setting and ancient gods for the two to wrestle with. Rumors of a possible ancient Egypt setting have been circulating for some time now, and they may not be too far off the mark, as newly discovered information hidden inside God of War Ragnarok’s files heavily hints at such a setting.
Over on the God of War Ragnarok subreddit, user TheMorse_ reported having found a couple a hidden cutscene inside the game’s file, which could be the beginning of the next entry in the series. This wouldn’t be the first time something like this happens: Ragnarok’s beginning was also hidden inside the files of 2018’s God of War.
“A hidden cutscene with what I think are beings from the higher plane and Athena talking about Odin and Atreus. There is also another character called ‘Robed Figure’, who says ‘To lefkó fídi tha se fáei.’ Greek for ‘The white snake will eat you.’ I believe this Robed Figure is Athena herself before revealing her face, similar to how Baldur was called ‘The Stranger’ and Freya was called ‘Hermit Witch’ before their names were revealed,” the user reported.
The hidden cutscene also features Atreus as he travels to other pantheons with an individual called “Mau.” “This being communicates only by saying the word ‘Mau’, similar to how Groot speaks by saying only ‘I’m Groot’, and people can understand what he’s saying. Atreus apparently can understand this person through his godly gift of language. Mau is Egyptian for cat, and is also one of the manifestations of the Sun God Ra,” the user elaborated while providing the direct dialogue between Atreus and Mau, and the aforementioned Robed Figure and Athena to support this.
“One failed us. One rejected us,” the Robed Figure says to Athena in the cutscene, likely referring to Odin who failed them, and Atreus, who has rejected them, setting up a very interesting stage for the next entry in the series.
As the next God of War game has yet to be officially announced and is likely still a few years away, there’s no way to know if these newly discovered cutscenes will indeed be the basis of the next God of War. Still, chances are pretty high, considering the precedent set by the 2018 entry in the series and its sequel.
Despite the long time since the launch God of War Ragnarok and the Valhalla free expansion, the Santa Monica Studio series returned to the spotlight last week thanks to the February 2026 State of Play presentation which revealed the God of War Trilogy Remake (which will reportedly feature a new combat system) and God of War: Sons of Sparta, a long-rumored 2.5D metroidvania game which serves as an origin story for Kratos when he was just a young Spartan.
