This guy has basically made the soundtrack (or acted as co-composer) to over half of my favorite games of all time. I don't know anyone that has worked on such a wide mix of AAA hits alongside lesser known gems. He is mainly known for "epic" sounding works, the kind of stuff that pumps you up during gameplay.
Most folks might know him only for Final Fantasy Tactics & Final Fantasy XII, maybe also from working on the Vanillaware games. But he also started out making banger music for arcade games & shmups.
Wanted to highlight some of his lesser known works, also with a few links (none of these are my channel btw).
Breath of Fire V (PS2)
My favorite Hitoshi soundtrack and favorite game on this list! Especially the ranger song for folks that think he only does Star Wars sounding stuff. The game did not do well IMO because of a mismatch with the audience. It came out in 2002 with heavy roguelike influence. Circa-2002 gamers were not ready for roguelike style yet, much less Breath of Fire fans.
Wizardry Variants Daphne
This is a mobile game, but of course because of Hitoshi it's one of the better Wizardry sountracks. The adventure guild song and rest of the OST is worth checking out.
Soukyuugurentai (Sega Saturn)
This one is a shmup, very challenging difficulty so not for everyone…but his music hits very hard here. IMO level 2 is pretty much the defining moment for his style that was carried over to Square games. Listen here.
Gauntlet IV (Genesis)
This game pretty much is just a great early Hitoshi/Iwata soundtrack that happens to have a game go with it. Worth checking out.
Radiant Silvergun
Just one more I'll leave with you all, another shmup. One of the best final boss sequences of all time.
