There was a ton of fighting game news that popped up this week, but there was one reveal that didn’t quite get the same amount of attention or positive reception.
During the busy State of Play event, Bandai Namco announced that Tekken: Dark Resurrection is coming back to modern PlayStation consoles, however, it wasn’t in the way that many fans were hoping for.
The updated version of Tekken 5 is coming to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 next month.
It’ll be coming to the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog in March though you should be able to purchase it separately like other classic Bamco fighters on the system.
Dark Resurrection added new characters like Lili, Dragunov, a playable Jinpachi, and Armor King II along with more stages and Tekken Bowl plus balance adjustments.
So what’s the problem?
Well, Bandai Namco opted to re-release the PlayStation Portable version of Tekken: Dark Resurrection.

Many fans have been hoping for a long time to see Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection come back, which is an upgraded version of what the PSP had with much better visuals and online play at the time (though it was missing content from said version and the original PlayStation 2 home port).
That iteration of Tekken 5, often considered the definitive way to play the entry, has been stuck on the PlayStation 3 for 19 years now.
Obviously, emulating and upscaling a PSP game is much, much simpler than attempting to remaster a PS3 title (just look at how long it took Metal Gear Solid 4 to get off of the system).
On the other hand, however, Resurrection was originally developed on the Namco System 246 arcade hardware modeled around the PlayStation 2, so you’d think it wouldn’t be that hard to port the original over now.
Or why not just release the PS2 version of Tekken 5?
For that front, Bamco could be going in release order since they already re-released Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, so Tekken Tag Tournament or Tekken 4 could be next on their list to that end with PS2 titles.
We’ve already seen them opt for the PSP versions of their old fighting games too between Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny in the past.
At least they have been pretty active in bringing back their classic fighters to the PS5 with the aforementioned releases plus Soul Calibur 3 recently hitting the console.
So maybe someday we’ll see some sort of new home port of Tekken 5.
But we’re not really holding out hope now that the PS3 version is getting remastered any time soon considering it’d be pretty confusing to have both Tekken: Dark Resurrection and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in the store at the same time.
On top of that reveal, there was of course also the new Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls characters plus release date as well as a new Dead or Alive project and Dead or Alive 6: Last Round at the State of Play.
And then we also got to see Toph looking slick as heck in her gameplay trailer for Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.
We don’t have a full release date yet for Tekken: Dark Resurrection, but it should be $10 at launch for those looking to pick it up outside of PS+.
