Tonight’s flag-bearers leading Team Canada into the Games

Freestyle skiing legend Mikaël Kingsbury and ski cross racer Marielle Thompson carried the flag for Canada tonight. They’re both veteran Olympic champions, they’re both competing in their fourth Winter Games and they’re both 33.

“I had goosebumps when I heard that I was going to be a flag-bearer,” Kingsbury, who has three Olympic medals and 100 World Cup wins, told our CBC Sports colleague Devin Heroux. “One of the best honours in my life. Very proud.”

Thompson and Kingsbury are the 27th and 28th flag bearers in Team Canada’s Winter Olympics history. The nation’s athletes will compete in 14 out of 16 events at this year’s Games with a veteran roster – 97 of its 206 teammates have been to the Olympics before.
