Take a look at the recent 2026 Toronto Gaming Expo GT winning list for Warhammer: The Old World, and why it works.

The other weekend saw the 2026 Toronto Gaming Expo GT (TXG) take place. Held in (you’ll never guess it) sunny Toronto, Canada. This is a smaller 2-day event. Something like 18 people registered, but it’s one of the first 2-day events of the year.  It had some light comp, pretty normal comp used in a lot of the Square Based events (only 2 Grand Cathay Lanterns, Grand Melee/Combined arms), and did use the Renegades pack. It was also played at 2200 pts. When the dust had settled on five epic rounds of The Old World, only one list had won all five rounds: Carlo Roque and his Jade Fleet. A big congrats to Carlo and all the other great players. Today lets dig into Carlo’s list and see why it works.

How The List Works

This is a list that really shows off how strong even heavily comped Cathay can be. It’s a pretty in-your-face list that can really spike damage and concentrate it.  You’ve got two Shugengan Lords to kick things off; these are powerful combat fighters/casters that are super maneuverable and put out a lot of damage. Then you’ve got two Lanterns (the max you could take at the event). These are both kitted out for close-in work, and one of them is a very resilient character mount. These are going to be in your face and doing a ton of damage.

Three cannons give you a lot of damage output, and with Ogres on each, you can spike that up to 6 cannon shots one turn. This allows you to really focus on a thing if needed. While the -1 to move did not stack at this event (good), they still put out a powerful debuff.

Lastly, you’ve got the two units of Jade Lancers. These can start off the table and come in when wanted pretty reliably (with a +/-2 to their ambush roll). While not amazing in combat, they can finish off wounded things and are decently hard to kill, especially if kept off the table for a while. They’ve got drilled for tricks. Both units also have a bound magic missile, letting them do some extra ranged damage, and bringing the list up to a potential 6 magic missiles a turn.

This isn’t a list that’s really built around any crazy combos or death star units. It’s just a bunch of strong units that each do well on their own and can really focus enemy units down. It’s mostly a shooting list, but a few of the units have some combat punch if needed. If the Lancers ambush, it’s also got only 3 drops, meaning it’s very likely to go first and alpha strike. I’m not sure why the list is Jade Fleet, as it doesn’t seem to gain anything from that Army of Infamy, nor does it lose anything, so OK, I guess.

The Characters in Detail

With nearly half the list in characters, we can take a bit of a closer look at them, as they are pretty important. First up: Shugengan Lords. The list takes two of them. The first one is a bit more tank-y. They’ve got the blade of the Jade Fleet giving them a 5+ regen and a bit more combat oomph. They take Battle Magic and Lore of Yang. With Lore Families they can pick their own spells. The second Shugengan knows 6 spells, meaning they also don’t have to roll for spells. Tome of Spell Craft lets them re-roll a casting attempt a turn. They don’t have any real combat upgrades.

These guys are very flexible, letting you both fight in combat and cast spells. The Shugengan are no slouches in combat and can take Hammer Hand to up their output. However, what I’m guessing Carlos is doing is using their ability to pick spells to let them each take Fireball and then also taking the Yang signature Constellation of the Dragon so that they each can get 2 magic missiles and just fly around shooting the heck out of things. There is some debate on whether you can do this with Lore Familiar (i.e., if it locks you into picking the main lore signature, or if you can take other signatures). I’m not sure how the event ran, so it’s possible that one took Hammerhand/Fireball and the other one took the two MMs.

Lastly, we’ve got the Strategist. Not a ton to say here, it’s a Lantern with extra stuff. It’s built to be super deadly up-close.  The Stratagest gives it a 5++ ward and makes sure it always has at least a 5+ save. It’s a crazy and points-efficient build. Beware!

Let us know what you think of the list down in the comments, and congrats to Carlos and the others for doing well in the event!
