Vail Christian continued its winning ways over the weekend, wrapping up back-to-back games with a 54-53 win over No. 8 Swallows Charter Academy.

“Two more great wins this weekend,” said head coach Andrew Neumann. “Once again showing the ability of this team to find a way to win in the closing minutes of tight games.”

Oliver Neumann went 7-for-10 from beyond the arc, leading the way with 23 points. Rayman Romanin added 11 of his own, going 5-for-5 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the narrow victory. Charles Perry drilled four 3-points, pouring in 16 points to lead Swallow Charter Academy while Elias Garcia pitched in 11 more.

Vail Christian has won seven straight games after also taking down West Grand 64-41 on Friday.

“We beat West Grand with a balanced effort from the team,” Neumann said. “Great rebounding and defense was again the key.”

Charlie Neumann led the way against the Mustangs with 11 points while Riley Mayer also got into double digits with 10 more of his own.

At 8-2 for the year and 2-0 in league play, Vail Christian rose to the seventh spot in the 2A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index over the weekend. The Saints host Vanguard Classical East on Jan. 23.

Other basketball notes

The Vail Mountain School girls basketball team parlayed its momentum from defeating Battle Mountain last week into back-to-back weekend victories. The Rangers took down De Beque 40-9 on Friday and Hayden 29-19 on Saturday. Kiana Garcia and Abby Adochio each scored 11 points in the win over the Dragons. Izzy Adochio added 11 rebounds, seven assists and eight steals. The Rangers (7-4) will put their four-game winning to the test at home against Rangely on Jan. 23.

The Vail Christian girls basketball team defeated West Grand 47-11 on Friday and took down KIPP Denver Collegiate 51-19 on Saturday to improve to 5-3 on the year. Susie Irving led the Saints with 17 points in the victory over the Mustangs and poured in 23 points against the White Tigers.

The Eagle Valley girls basketball team improved to 6-6 on the year with a 52-40 win over Dakota Ridge on Saturday.

Wrestling notes

Battle Mountain hosted the Queens of the Mountain girls wrestling tournament on Saturday. North Fork topped the 12-team field, followed by Eagle Valley, as the hosts finished in 10th.

The Devils received wins from Luvlyn Ward (115 pounds) and Julia Borejszo (135 pounds). Nora Abbot and Gabby Littlepage picked up runner-up finishes at 105 and 145 pounds, respectively, for Eagle Valley.

The Huskies were led by 110-pound Perla Chavez’s fourth-place finish. Former Huskies C.J. Traylor and Ayla Hampton won their respective weight classes for Summit, which is in its first year of varsity girls wrestling.
