CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The Charleston Scottish Games for 2026 have been canceled due to circumstances “beyond the control of the Board of Directors of the Scottish Society of Charleston Inc.,” organizers said.
Officials said efforts to reduce the 2025 budget were not enough to offset additional costs associated with the 2025 venue, leading to the decision not to return to Riverfront Park.
Organizers said they are exploring alternative venues that better suit attendees’ experience while remaining fiscally responsible.
Instead of planning the 2026 event, officials said the organization will focus on fundraising. They acknowledged that asking the community for assistance is difficult but said it is necessary.
Organizers said they hope to resume the event in 2027.
Founded in 1971, the Charleston Scottish Games & Highland Gathering is the second-oldest event of its kind in the Southeast. The annual event typically draws more than 10,000 visitors from across the country and abroad, celebrating Scottish heritage and history.
Charleston Scottish Games says they’re taking donations on the Scottish Society of Charleston’s website.
“Please know that it weighs heavily on our hearts to ask for donations from our members and community, and that we are forced to cancel our Games for 2026,” organizers said. “Unfortunately, we have no other alternative.”
