NAKINA, NC (WWAY) — Detectives with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the operation and promotion of illegal electronic video gaming machines at a local business.

Detectives conducted undercover operations and surveillance over several weeks, gathering evidence.

On Thursday, January 8, detectives executed a search warrant at the Shop and Save Convenience Mart at 7824 Seven Creeks Highway in Nakina. This resulted in the seizure of five illegal gaming machines and the arrest of Ali Shoqi Saleh and Ali Ahmed Hamdi Saleh.

Ali Shoqi Saleh is charged with operating greater than or equal to 5 video gaming machines, operating/possession slot machines, operating video gaming machines, and electronic sweepstakes. He was placed under a $5,000 secured bond.

Ali Ahmed Hamdi Saleh is charged with operating greater than or equal to 5 video gaming machines, operating/possession slot machines, operating video gaming machines, electronic sweepstakes, and gambling. He was also placed under a $5,000 secured bond.

In addition, a dead wildlife animal was found stored in their refrigerated walk-in cooler and Columbus County Environmental Health Services was called to investigate.

“This case is a direct result of citizens stepping forward and sharing their concerns. Our detectives dedicated countless hours to undercover work and surveillance to build a strong, safe case. When our community submit tips, we listen, investigate thoroughly, and take action. Partnerships like this make our county safer for everyone,” Columbus County Sheriff Bill Rogers said.
