Welcome back to MassivelyOP’s annual MMORPG awards for 2025!
Today’s award is for the Biggest MMO Surprise, which was awarded to WoW’s big housing reveal last year. This category is meant to offer something quite different from big stories, disappointments, and blunder; it’s meant to be something nobody saw coming at all, usually something positive, though not always. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!
And the MassivelyOP staff pick for Biggest MMO Surprise is…
Guild Wars Reforged

“I feel as if I shouldn’t be surprised at Guild Wars Reforged, but I am. I did not have this on my bingo card, and it’s just a nice update to an already very good game that doesn’t even cost anything if you already own it. The fact that there’s the possibility of more in the future is just an added little cherry on top. Sure, seeing the surprising success of Palia and the return of Defiance was nice (and I’d rather focus on that over things like Amazon’s self-inflicted demise or the whole Cryptic fiasco) but Guild Wars Reforged is a breath of fresh air in a year when most of the big players were content to more or less just coast along until 2026.” -MOP’s Eliot
That’s our take. What’s your pick?

How does MassivelyOP choose the winner? Our team nominates and discusses candidates to (ideally) reach consensus on our whole slate of awards each year. The site’s award goes to the staff selection, but we’ll include both it and the community’s top nomination in our debrief in January (here’s last year’s, along with historical winners for every category). Poll options are not exhaustive, so feel free to write in your picks if they weren’t nominated.
