Street Fighter 6 is trucking along in it’s third year, but the game has been going through something of a content drought lately.
The Street Fighter Director and Producer promise there is more to come for players here in 2026.
Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto recently took part in Famitsu’s annual New Year’s game developer messages to talk a bit about what they’re cooking up behind the scenes.
As for the Producer, he of course mentions Alex and Ingrid are on the way as well as even more collaborations for SF6 while the Street Fighter series as a whole approaches its 40th anniversary.
“For Street Fighter 6’s Year 3, we still have Alex and Ingrid waiting,” wrote Matsumoto via Famitsu as translated by our own Nicholas ‘MajinTenshinhan’ Taylor. “Along with a bunch of other updates, and we’re not going to reduce the pace of our collaborations either. And in 2027, it’s the 40th anniversary of Street Fighter! We’re currently preparing many things for this occasion. Please look forward to them.”
“Thankfully, I feel fulfilled with many things to do and many things to think about. Thank you so much to all of our fans, all of our community and all of our players!”
The game did certainly feature some unexpected crossovers last year like the Street Fighter 6 x Aespa K-pop collab, and it sounds like things that are going to continue moving forward as well.
Nakayama shares some of the same sentiment while also talking about the upcoming Street Fighter film, which recently received its first teaser trailer.
“In 2026, we have the Year 3 characters Alex and Ingrid coming to Street Fighter 6 and there’s also the new Street Fighter movie which is coming out on October 16th,” said Nakayama. “When it comes to the characters, we’re all putting our all into their development. Please look forward to some very dense BGMs for them.”
“I think there’s a slow trickle of information coming out about the movie as well, but from the actors to the director and the producers, it’s nothing but great people who truly understand the IP and value it. I’m helping as well so I’ll do my best. Everyone! I hope we can all continue to get along in 2026! Thank you for the support.”
Although they of course bring up the new characters, it is interesting that they make no real mention of more updates coming in the immediate future.
The game is currently in the middle of a three-month drought since C. Viper released back in September besides the new battle HUD DLC last month, and with Alex slated for early Spring, we could be looking at another three months without much to really look forward to.
Capcom has been exceptionally slow in releasing new costumes for Street Fighter 6 to the point that we’re seeing fans begging to let them spend money on the game, which is something we’ve never really seen before.
They’ve put out Outfit 4 options for less than half of the cast at this point, and we haven’t seen any more since Mech Zangief arrived at the same time as Viper.
Hopefully, they do have more planned to help hold fans over in this big gap until Alex arrives though they haven’t seemed to be in much of a rush so far.
There’s also no real mention of the Capcom Cup 12’s pay-per-view status, which isn’t too surprising since SF6’s eSports side is now separate from the main development team.
It would certainly be nice though if Capcom would start to up their communication game again, so players would have a better idea of what’s actually going on and coming to the title.
But we’ll just have to wait and see what the new year has to bring for Street Fighter 6.
Now former Tekken Director Katsuhiro Harada shared his own New Year’s messages as well talking about his current situation and future outside of Bandai Namco.
The New Virtua Fighter Project’s Producer also talked about 2026 being the time to finally unveil the game to the masses, so we’ll have more to look forward to on that front at least.
