Back in the ’90s, Capcom and Square were on top of the gaming world, but we never really got to see the fighting game and RPG legends team up officially outside of Super Smash Bros.

That’s finally changing now, however, though unofficially through the Capcom vs. Square: Parallel Destinies fan-made fighting game.

After many months of hard work, the team has now released their first public demo for Capcom vs. Square for fans to take for a test drive.

They of course draw heavy inspiration from the Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK series, but this game is actually a standard 1v1 fighter.

The demo includes six playable characters between Street Fighter’s Ryu, Mega Man Zero and Red Earth’s Tessa on the Capcom side plus Final Fantasy Tactics’ Agrias Oaks, Ehrgeiz’s Han and The Newzealand Story’s Tiki.

More are planned including Chrono Trigger’s Crono, Final Fight’s Hugo, Darstalkers’ BB Hood, Breath of Fire’s Scias, Dragon Quest’s Alena Tsarevna and Sundown Kid from Live-A-Live.

Plus they’re working on Darkstalkers’ Jedah and Final Fantasy 5’s Exdeath for boss fights though they’re not in the game yet.

The demo features Arcade Quest, Versus, Training and Online modes to delve into.

Capcom vs. Square is a four-button fighter with mechanics pulled from other titles like Street Fighter 3’s parries as well as rolls and super jumps.

While it is cool to see the amount of progress made here, the developers will unfortunately be taking a year-long hiatus from the project before working on the 2.0 version build of the game.

This isn’t the only fan-made crossover fighter we’ve seen lately with Sega vs. Capcom also getting multiple playable demos.

More information can be found on the Capcom vs. Square website.
