By this point, Steve is known to be the best character of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Thanks to his ability to effectively transform the layout of any stage by placing blocks, Steve is capable of locking opponents out from interaction and can even render their recovery options entirely nonfunctional.
A funny clip uploaded by Kinoko_SMB recently showcased the ending of a match between Steve and Young Link. Steve had already accrued over 160% damage with his last stock, but Young Link was also in the danger zone with over 80% damage taken.
Thanks to the unblockable properties of Steve’s Minecart, Steve was able to get Young Link off the stage. Rather than going for a traditional edge guard, Steve instead opted to gimp Young Link’s recovery by blockading him with a wall of blocks.
Had Young Link panicked in this situation, he probably wouldn’t have been able to make it back to the ledge. Young Link’s up special could’ve destroyed all the impeding blocks, but not before they robbed him of the horizontal momentum needed to survive.
Instead, Young Link decided to counter the blocks with his down aerial. It’s interesting to note that Link and Young Link’s down aerials have unique properties as they will generally “bounce” the characters if they connect with some sort of hurtbox.
As a result, Young Link was able to sort of “pogo stick” his way up the wall of blocks. Following this, Young Link caught Steve off guard with an up special near the top.
