The Game Awards 2025 presentation proved to be an interesting event. For the Best Fighting Game of the year award, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves ended up winning over 2XKO, the Capcom Fighting Collection 2, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage.

Caitlyn was also revealed to be the first new champion coming to 2XKO for Season 1. It’s interesting to note that the developers have promised five new champions for every season.

We were also provided with a sneak peek at the Street Fighter movie in the form of a new trailer. This movie is set to hit theaters on October 16, 2026.

For Invincible Vs, Ella Mental was revealed as the next playable fighter. Ella Mental is a completely original character developed specifically for Invincible Vs, created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker.

While not directly tied to fighting games, the return of Mega Man with the announcement of Mega Man: Dual Override ended up being quite the surprise. With a renewed focus on Mega Man, perhaps we’ll see the Blue Bomber getting referenced more in future fighting games involving Capcom.

During our speculative rundown for The Game Awards 2025, we felt as though this event would be a prime opportunity for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and the new Virtua Fighter project announcements. Oddly, we ended up receiving no updates for either game.

It’s interesting to note that the new Virtua Fighter project was originally first announced a full year ago during The Game Awards 2024 presentation. This gave the impression that The Game Awards 2025 event would be the prime opportunity for Sega to release additional information about the game.

When the game was first announced, only Akira and Stella (a newcomer that looks like Sarah Bryant) were revealed. Five months later, the third character, Wolf Hawkfield, got a cinematic trailer. However, it’s been seven months since then.

Although we still don’t know the official title for this new Virtua Fighter project, it felt like Sega has been ramping up attention on Virtua Fighter with recent interviews. Despite all of this, it would seem that Sega might be waiting to share more information in 2026.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was also revealed during Sony’s State of Play stream back in June. The characters revealed that day for the 4v4 fighter were Captain America, Iron Man, Star-Lord, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Dr. Doom, Spider-Man and Ghost Rider.

Since then, there have been zero additional characters revealed for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. While the developers have adequately kept Marvel fans occupied with two separate beta tests, it feels weird that they haven’t been able to share details on at least one more fighter.

For a 4v4 fighting game to work, one has to imagine that Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has to have an especially large roster. As of right now, most match ups in the upcoming Arc System Works fighter will involve at least one mirror match since there have only been eight characters revealed.

As it’s been over six months since the game was first revealed, The Game Awards 2025 felt like it was the perfect opportunity for a few new characters to get revealed. Instead, it’s now appearing like we’ll only receive relevant announcements during State of Play presentations in 2026.
