When Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising, the sequel to Granblue Fantasy Versus, launched back in 2023 one of the more unique things it offered was a free-to-play version with a very limited, but rotating, roster. My colleague Dakota “DarkHorse” Hills even wrote about his impressions with this version of the game.
It’s not something that had gone entirely unexplored before — Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters was a similar concept — but it’s fairly unique among newer fighting games. For the next week, anyone who’s been skeptical of trying out Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising now has a perfect opportunity to do so with the free version, given what the developers are offering.
As reported by the official Granblue Fantasy Versus X account, starting today and lasting for a full week, the entire launch roster of the game will be selectable characters for anyone who’s playing the free version.
While this doesn’t include any of the Season 1 or Season 2 DLC characters, that’s still a whopping 28 fighter roster to pick and choose from, so if you’ve been interested at all in the game but not sure if it’s worth the plunge, now’s your chance to try it out for free and make your decision.
Since the free version gives you full matchmaking access, this is a perfect chance to see how the game feels and with so many characters to choose from, you’ll have plenty of variety to go through and see if anyone fits you.
Also don’t worry about your progress being gated — even on the free version, if you decide to upgrade to the priced version after, your progress and in-game currency will carry over to it.
Although it doesn’t appear to be part of any of the Black Friday sales going on, this is a great way to try it out for free and check if it’s worth investing in.
