PHOENIX, N.Y. — Calling all fans to wear pink!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the JV and Varsity girls soccer teams at John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix are helping in the effort.
The teams will host a Pink Out! game at the school on Tuesday, October 14. The varsity team will take on Chittenango at 7 p.m. and before that, the junior varsity team will take on Chittenango at 5 p.m.
The team is raising money for the Baldwin Fund and according to Phoenix Coach Jason Stenta, the team has currently raised $1,200 by selling the shirts they will be wearing.
“It is super important for us at Phoenix to promote breast cancer awareness month. Breast Cancer as well as other cancers have touched our families here in the Phoenix community but also many all around us,” said Coach Stenta. “To be able to use sports as a platform to promote breast cancer awareness is a powerful reminder that cancer, not only breast cancer, can affect people of all ages. With breast cancer, early detection can save lives. Sports brings critical awareness so woman can get regular screenings needed to have the best chance possible to overcome cancer. “
There will also be a basket at the game where people can donate money.
