Baldur’s Gate 3 is stuffed to the brim with iconic characters, featuring award-winning performances from the likes of Neil Newbon, Samantha Beart, and Jennifer English, and they were more than helped by the game’s excellent writing. There are dozens of memorable quotes from Baldur’s Gate 3, and you could argue that Shadowheart has the best line of all.

We all know that Shadowheart is “God’s favorite princess”, which was a line of dialogue given to her as part of the game’s prologue chapter which was added post-launch. It originally started out as a meme that actor Jennifer English had found on Twitter, who then proceeded to voice the line herself. It was so popular with both fans and Larian that the developers managed to work it into the game itself.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Shadowheart Actor Didn’t Want To Record One Of Her Most Iconic Lines

However, it was recently revealed that English didn’t actually want to record that line in the first place. In a recent video by Fall Damage (thanks GamesRadar), English says that she saw the line on Twitter, but didn’t actually want to do it because she’s “avoidant” (big same). Thankfully, Baldur’s Gate 3 performance director – and Jennifer English’s girlfriend – Aliona Baranova was on hand to do what had to be done.

“Aliona found a meme that someone had made of that quote next to Shadowheart,” says English, “and this was really early on. And Aliona goes, ‘Babe, you have to record that.’ And I didn’t want to because I’m avoidant. And she bullied me into it.”

That push eventually convinced English to record the line, admitting that she “did it in [her] own time”. It’s a good job she did too, because it’s undoubtedly one of the best lines of dialogue in the entire game, propelling Shadowheart up to the lofty heights of fan favorite even further than she already was, and cementing her status as one of the best characters in the game. Thank you, Aliona Baranova, for being the bully Baldur’s Gate 3 fans needed.
