Mortal Kombat II released a new image of Sub-Zero in his resurrected form, and it looks exactly like the character from the video games. The sequel is setting up another death match between Scorpion and Noob Saibot, two of the franchise’s best villains.

Sub-Zero will return as the undead Noob Saibot in the Mortal Kombat sequel. The 2021 film teased this debut when Scorpion killed Bi-Han, but those who’ve played the games know that Bi-Han will come back from the Netherrealm. This was confirmed at the end of the sequel’s trailer, where Scorpion dispatched Noob Saibot with a fatality. An exclusive photo via Collider offers a glimpse into the resurrected wraith’s design and abilities.

Director Simon McQuoid went to great lengths to ensure Noob Saibot’s look is faithful to the video games. “This version of Bi-Han is a fan-favorite and mysterious character, who demands a costume design that captures the game’s aesthetics while maintaining the realism of the films,” he explained. Based on the photo, the cowl and mask design are heavily inspired by the character’s Mortal Kombat 11 incarnation. Bi-Han (played by Joe Taslim) is still recognizable behind the soulless countenance.

Mortal Kombat II Director Explains Noob Saibot’s Shadow Wraith Design

“To translate his distinctive shadow-wraith look onto film, we drew most of our inspiration from the recent version of the game [Mortal Kombat 1],” McQuoid confirmed. “His body was made of low-gloss textured black rubber under-skin, while his armor was organic in style and featured a dark gray pearlescent reflective finish. The shadow clone within him is a different character, so we needed a different costume and color, but they shared materials, ensuring his unique look was clearly separated from his shadow clone while always being born from the same character.”

That explains the entity Scorpion was seen extracting with his chained kunai in the trailer. Noob Saibot uses teleportation, cloaking, and shadow manipulation to confuse enemies. He can also animate his shadow and use it as a clone to deal more damage. McQuoid teased the character has more tricks up his sleeve. “The Scorpion vs. Bi-Han fight in Netherrealm was complex, so we used different colors taken from his powers in the games to help the audience distinguish between the characters; dark purple for his shadow, and a dark graphite gray for him.”

Taslim teased Bi-Han’s revenge arc in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The actor also pitched a spinoff storyline for his character. “The most interesting path, in my opinion, is to do a prequel,” he said. “It would be a story about Bi-Han and his training in the Lin Kuei. When he got abducted by the Lin Kuei, his parents were killed. So it would be the process of him and his brother becoming assassins.… We would get to see two future Sub-Zeros in one movie, and that would be intriguing.”
