After the massive success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (over 36.24 million units sold and counting), it felt like there was a period in which other companies were attempting to capitalize on the platform brawler genre. Warner Bros. teamed up with Player First Games to develop MultiVersus, a crossover platform brawler featuring the many intellectual properties of Warner Bros.

Needless to say, many gamers saw incredible potential in MultiVersus which resulted in the game breaking records during its beta phase. It was often joked that this game would become the “Smash Killer,” suggesting that it could potentially even usurp Super Smash Bros. from its throne as the most renowned platform brawler.

However, the relaunch of MultiVersus after its year-long hiatus ended up doing more damage than good. Even the additions of characters like Jason Voorhees and Agent Smith did little to curb the game’s trajectory.

Eventually, it was announced that Warner Bros. Games would be closing Player First Games and ceasing development on MultiVersus even though it hadn’t even been a full year since the company had been purchased. This was clear evidence that the game had massively outperformed.

At this point, MultiVersus has been completely shutdown as a live service. While it’s still possible to play the game offline, it feels like it’s a mere shell of what could’ve been.

Matt McMuscles recently released a new video talking about the subject. Supposedly, he has gotten into contact with an anonymous former WB employee to help shed light on… well, “What Happened” with MultiVersus.
