LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The Commonwealth Games have made it their mission to ensure everyone is included in the weekend’s festivities.
This year, the Games hosted a variety of events, including rugby, baseball, fishing, soccer and track and field, specifically designed for participants with physical and intellectual disabilities.
McKinley Johnson Jr., a coach from Area 24, has been training his athletes since the beginning of June. His team has been practicing the softball throw, turbo javelin and running on the track.

“It’s been a wonderful experience. It’s been a blessing to be able to be a part, and to these athletes, both young and old, they have a lot to offer and a lot to give,” said Johnson.
The Commonwealth Games plan to add even more events each year as they continue to expand the Able Games, ensuring inclusivity and participation for all.
