Another familiar character has been cast for the upcoming Street Fighter reboot. After several big names have already been announced, the latest actor to board the project is Vidyut Jammwal (Commando).

Per Deadline, Jammwal has been cast in the role of Dhalsim. The Dhalsim character has been featured in the video games since 1991’s Street Fighter II. Depicted as a yogi with the ability to spit fire, his memorable special moves include “Yoga Flame” and “Yoga Fire.” Dhalsim is also able to stretch his limbs to punch and kick opponents from afar. The character is a pacifist who goes against his peaceful beliefs by competing in a global tournament of the world’s greatest fighters in order to raise money for his village.

Jammwal is best known for his work in India, where he appeared in major blockbuster franchises like Commando and Khuda Haafiz. He also produced and starred in last year’s Crakk. Though he is still making a name for himself in the United States, the actor boasts more than 22 million followers across social media.

Major WWE Star in Talks to Play Guile in Street Fighter Reboot

The role of Guile may have been found in a popular WWE star.

Dhalsim was previously reimagined in live-action. Roshan Seth (Gandhi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) played the character in the first Street Fighter film released in 1994. However, he was imagined as an Indian scientist who’s been forced to work for the villainous M. Bison (Raul Julia). The next live-action film, 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, did not feature the Dhalsim character.

Street Fighter Reboot Art Imagines How Cody Rhodes’ Guile & David Dastmalchian’s M. Bison Might Appear

BossLogic artwork imagines what Cody Rhodes and David Dastmalchian might look like in the new Street Fighter movie.

The movie is being directed by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip). Plot details have not been revealed, but the casting news makes it clear that many characters from the games will be featured in the movie. It remains to be seen how faithful the new film will be to the original games, given how the previous live-action adaptations famously made lots of big changes to various characters.

Notably, movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have found immense success with adaptations that are rather faithful. The same can be said for taking the same strategy on the small screen, with Amazon’s Fallout serving as a prime example. A new Mortal Kombat movie is also on the way, and it will have the big tournament from the games after fans were unhappy to see that missing from part one.

The Street Fighter reboot does not currently have a set release date.
