The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here, and players all around the world are not only enjoying new games but original Switch games as well through its mostly functional backwards compatibility. The keyword here is mostly.
Nintendo has identified some issues with one of their biggest Switch games in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that’ll need to be fixed in a new update as well as some other notable fighting games.
According to the official Japanese Nintendo support page, the Mii Fighters in particular are causing some problems with the new console.
If a Switch 2 player is matched up against a Switch player online and one of them is using a Mii Fighter, it can immediately cause the game to end.
Nintendo is asking users to refrain from using Mii Fighters online for the time being until the problem is fixed.
There’s another smaller issue with them as well with saving a Mii Fighter on the Switch 2 not displaying the correct thumbnail image, which can sometimes be fixed by saving the file again.
They confirm that an update is planned for Smash Ultimate to address these issues.
With the previously revealed compatibility issues list, some fighting games like Under Night In-Birth have already been fixed while others like Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R remain.
On top of that, the Capcom Fighting Collection 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection are also now on the list with the former stating there could be some texture issues on the Switch 2.
The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is also still on the list with a note that playing online across the different consoles will cause the original Switch player to experience texture distortion.
With Smash Ultimate selling over 36 million copies and the Switch 2 now out, fans were hopeful that a Deluxe Edition or brand new Super Smash Bros. may be on the way, but that probably won’t be happening any time soon.
Series Director Masahiro Sakurai is instead working on Kirby Air Riders currently, which will undoubtedly take up most if not all of his concentration until the game is complete.
So the future of Super Smash Bros. remains up in the air right now.
Stay tuned for more updates as to when these issues are hopefully fixed for Switch 2 players.
