We’ve seen a couple instances now of the change to Street Fighter 6’s Parry system which is scheduled to be implemented on June 5, 2025, the same day that Elena is added to the game.

While it’s possible this change doesn’t make it into the game — based on everything we’ve seen so far — it’s coming.

Parries in Season 3 are set to require a back input for high attacks, and a down input for low attacks, along with the standard button presses of Medium Punch + Medium Kick. Not doing so will give a non-screen freeze parry, like what happens when you Perfect Parry a projectile currently.

This means that you do not get 5 frames of invincibility that the game currently offers players, which is indicated by the screen freeze, if you do not choose the correct directional input.

Perfect Parries are currently extremely scaled, with the next hit only doing half the damage it normally would, and scaling further down from there if you keep the combo going.

The input change could have a dramatic impact on the game, as right now players do not have to choose between high or low parries, and will very often mash Parry through strings of attacks to hopefully catch someone either delaying or mistiming their attack, completely changing momentum and doing so for little risk defensively.

However, while this will still work in Season 3, the rewards for doing so are greatly diminished, as the lack of 5 frames of invincibility mean you’ll have much more trouble interrupting your opponent’s attacks in those instances.

Because of decreased rewards and all of the standard risks that come with attempting a Parry in Street Fighter 6, we’re going to see this move used less often in the meta, as overusing it will lead to more counters and losses.

While it’s certain that Perfect Parries will still be very effective, there’s simply more risk and difficulty with pulling them off in Season 3.

Incoming crossups, which can be countered by tapping the Parry command as your character stands up, will also require inputting the correct direction on the joystick to get the screen freeze in Season 3, making these approaches all the more effective.

It’s a common tactic in Street Fighter 6’s meta to tap the Parry command when you think someone is going to go for a crossup as you’re waking up from a knockdown, as currently the game doesn’t require an input for which side the attack is coming from.

However, since this is set to change in Season 3, crossups and the characters who are strong at them, are going to be all the more effective, as they’ll be considerably more difficult to counter now.

Ambiguous crossups in the Street Fighter franchise are known to be deadly, which is something that’s heavily mitigated with how Perfect Parry currently works.

Removing the ability to Parry crossups easily is going to make the characters and players who rely on crossups all the more successful.

Season 3 of Street Fighter 6 is set to happen very soon, and it’s going to be very interesting to see how all of these changes impact player habits and abilities.
