Although the game launched officially only around a year ago, MultiVersus is already about to close up shop for good.

Warner Bros. is pulling the plug on their crossover platform fighter that once looked poised to compete with Super Smash Bros., and the end will be here in just a few days.

The official conclusion for MultiVersus is set to come this Friday, May 30 as previously announced.

Servers for the game will be shut down at 9 a.m. PDT / 12 p.m. EDT, so there’s now less than two days to hop on and head online for the last time.

MultiVersus isn’t fully disappearing, however, for those who have played the game up to this point.

Logging into the game before the servers shut down will give players access to an offline version of MVS that’ll remain available.

Users will be able to keep all of their purchased content to play locally, but it doesn’t sound as though you’ll get access to content that wasn’t purchased to your account.

There’s much that could be said regarding why MultiVersus was ultimately deemed a failure in the eyes of WB to the point that they’d shut it down after just a year on the market.

Expensive microtransactions were a likely factor in their downfall that many / most players probably tried to avoid if they could, which would have been the game’s main source of revenue.

Major gameplay changes from the open beta period of MultiVersus also seemingly drove away a number of players who enjoyed the direction the game was originally taking.

Also changed from the beta was how characters and content could be unlocked for free that led to much more grinding and necessary play time to make progress.

It’s not just MultiVersus itself that’s being shuttered either, as Warner Bros. is closing the developer Player First Games as well after purchasing the studio less than a year ago.

This looming shutdown also comes as Warner Bros. confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 is done receiving new content updates after just a year and a half.

So this isn’t a very good month for WB-run fighting games.

As someone who put over 100 hours into the beta (and significantly less into the full release), MultiVersus will be remembered as a platform fighter with a lot of potential that couldn’t get out of its own way with missteps, expensive content and broken promises.
