The game is set in an alternate history 1960s England, five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster, which has transformed much of Northern England into a radioactive quarantine zone.
In Atomfall, players assume the role of an unidentified amnesiac protagonist exploring the quarantine zone in the Lake District. The objective is to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disaster while contending with mutated creatures, members of a violent doomsday cult, rogue military agents, and robots.
The game is played from a first-person perspective, emphasizing survival mechanics. Players can scavenge resources to craft weapons and utilize firearms, though ammunition is scarce. Managing the protagonist’s health and heart rate is crucial; activities like combat and sprinting increase heart rate, leading to impaired vision and hearing.
