I'm currently watching the Resident Evil 2 Developers react to 49 minute speed run video. It strikes me there are so many tricks being used the game developers spot – but don't know how the gamer is implementing them. I'd really like to know what these are or if anyone on here knows how these are being done.

(Also, side note, the gamer doing the speedrun seems to just be chatting to his buddies about things completely unrelated to the game while powering through)

So some of the tricks, I've seen:

  • He perfectly dodges every zombie and Mr X by using the 90 degree button, somehow.

  • He does this limping trick while running up stairs to get there extra fast. How is this done?

  • While in the library, he moves the book case slightly – which somehow causes a group of zombies to walk away from him when he's coming down the ladder

  • He uses a knife to kill G in every boss fight. How is the knife that powerful and how is he not getting killed?

  • why does he lower the frame rate in the penultimate boss fight with G? How does this help him?

It's an entertaining watch, actually, seeing how the developers react.

I'm surprised I have not seen any discussion of this video and the tricks the gamer uses on Reddit tbh. There's like one other thread and barely any discussion in the comments.

Edit: Literally every single one of my comments is being downvoted. Even ones where I am thanking people for their answers. I am done with this.

As for answers to all your questions, usually the specific game will have a dedicated community on speedrun.com and usually a specific discord server too, and there you’ll be able to find all the tricks being used and how and why they work like they do

Largegames are made by hundreds of people and have many systems that work well together. Can’t answer em all but I can do some.

I know the stair movement is done by changing the animation from the stair movement which is what the game uses to decide your speed. Pulling out and putting away a weapon puts you in a different animation and which screws with your positioning and speed.

The knife, this one’s fun. Higher frame rates. Basically when the knife is swung and is hitting an enemy it’s adding damage each frame. If you crank the game to a higher frame rate there are more damage frames for the knife to calculate so more damage. This one is fun when you can run the game at like 4-500 fps the knife becomes godmode.

Library zombies: Enemy AI is weird. They figured out they could get the zombies to behave a certain way by doing that and they weren’t in the way anymore.

No idea on the rest. Check out some marathon runs of the game like GDQ or something. The runners explain tricks during those sometimes. Welcome to speed running! It’s fun and stupid lol

think ive watched that speedrun as i was going to attempt the finish under 4/hour and in so many steps/knife only/no box run but gave up i don’t mind those speedruns.

i dislike map skipping speedruns with a passion tho lol

  4. Oh neat something I can answer as someone who has done speedruns for RE2!

For doing 90 degree turns, you basically flick the control stick(or mouse if on PC) in the direction you want to go and tap the aim button immediately afterwards to do the turn. It’s done to minimize time by cutting fractions off a second by turning normally. It adds up in the end.

The stair trick is called stair-skating which is something that can be found in other RE games. When going up the stairs, tap the aim button quickly and go forward when letting go and Claire/Leon would take a couple steps very quickly. Rinse & repeat til you get to the top. Make sure you tap the aim button again after your character takes those quick steps because afterwards they will slow down to their normal run speed if the control stick is held for too long.

The bookcase thing is basically speedrunners knowing in great detail how the AI works for most of the zombies in the game. When descending down the ladder, once you are close to the bottom you become in range of the zombies so they go for the grab but you have invincibility frames when getting off the ladder. So the zombies zoom past you and give a clear path to the exit.

As for the knife, the damage is tied to the framerate somehow. So on high framerate(around 120 fps) you can cheese the Burkin fights somewhat. The first is easy to do(got it on my first attempt). The second Burkin fight can eat a bag of dicks. It has ended my runs so many times. Third and fourth Burkin fights are easier to deal with though.

The last Burkin fight, idk what you mean. I usually keep my fps at least at 120 fps. More likely the speedrunner is lowering the graphic settings to KEEP the framerate high for the knife trick.

Another trick you didn’t mention but Claire actually has a faster sprint speed when her health is in the yellow. Which is why speedrunners take damage at first on the way to RPD at the beginning of the game.

    Hope this helps!
