Have been unhappy with memory temp and thought about how I could effectively increase gpu cooling-efficiency with a low budget and without ruining the warranty of the card. I also wanted to keep the actual design of the card close to the original or at least somewhat pleasant to look at. The inspiration is taken from the Nvidia FE 30/40s cards, with added heat sink)

(PS. I would rotate the heat sink 90 degrees so the air from the front panel could pass trough the fins and out the back exhaust)

The card is a Gainward 4090 Phantom

My budget is 40 dollars

Heat sink: (20$) 8 generic hard drive heat sinks covering a 10x10x2,5cm area on the backside of the chip (aluminium)

Thermal bad from Artic (13$) (3x APT2012 pink Multipack or 1x blue generic thermal pad, both Artic)

Fan (10$) (artic p12 slim)

As you can see, the heat sink with its thermal pad is quite expensive comparatively. My question is would it be worth the passive cooling it gets without a fan, or do I have to use a fan on them, and in that case, is the performance gained from that worth the extra 10$ (totaling 40$ for just the heat sink system).

(I am in a Norwegian market, so a cheaper heat sink system is not an alternative)

I am asking in case someone already has tried a passively cooled backplate heat sink-system. I’ve only seen bulky dual-fan systems on top of giant backplate-heat sinks, which I don’t have either budget or aesthetic enthusiasm for. I was hoping the front intake and back exhaust +the added tempered exhaust from the additional gpu-fan would push air troughs and cool the heat sink.
