Working on a friends computer and when I took off the run-of-the-mill cpu cooler (some cheap cooler master one) I noticed what looks like melted rubber on both of the cpu cooler mounting brackets. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before. Was planning on installing a new cooler but I’m not sure if I should try and scrape that rubber looking stuff off with the indents from the coolers fins or not.

Wanted to add, it feels like melted rubber when you touch it
I have never seen this before.
That definitely gave off a smell
clearly the thermal protection on that board do not exist or are not working
I’ve never seen this before but apparently they used an inferior plastic with a lower melting point than they should have. You can purchase these on eBay or wherever online. I would suggest getting new ones. Do not get 3D printed ones.
Yeah no yeah that ain’t good lol what the fuck
That cooler was probably mounted incorrectly.
Email Steve and send this to gamers nexus, he will light the company on fire for you.
Looks like some rubber like glue, maybe to fixate the cooler more for shipping, the hook style mount with the brackets isn’t the most firm against cooler movement. The glued fan header probably also is against it getting unplugged during shipping, albeit it should be unlikely to happen anyway.
Incorrectly mounted cooler. Or cooler doesn’t support the socket
This isn’t melted and it actually isn’t as bad as it looks. I’ve seen it only a couple of times, but I have seen it.
Thermoplastics will soften and move far below their melting point, but slowly and under a lot of force.
A CPU heatsink touching the retention bracket is hot, under a lot of force, and there for a long time. The heatsink should not be touching the retention, but here we are. Anyway, this will cause impressions in the plastic over time. It isn’t too hot and it isn’t melting the plastic.
There’ll be no smell, no outward indication this is taking place, and the plastic won’t stick to the cooler (since it hasn’t melted). When you take the cooler off, you get to see that and, if you’re unfamiliar with the properties of thermoplastics, big puzzles.
While they look funky, they’re not structurally unsound and you can safely continue using them.
i’ve seen it before, from what i could tell, its intentional, its likely noise dampening
No. It’s all excess thermal paste
