It’s hard to win baseball games when you only score one run in 19 innings, but that’s what the Giants have accomplished over the last two games against the Detroit Tigers, as they lose the rubber match three to one in extra innings.

Tigers, this is a tough team.

Good bullpen, solid starting pitching, and they’re in the thick of it in the AL Central, as you just heard from Kipe, as we welcome everybody to Toyota Giants Post Game Live.

A tough one for the Giants as they fall a season high, 20 games under 500.

Sean Estes and I will talk about it.

I am Bob Carillo.

Of course, in missed opportunities, bad execution, just another storyline here for the 2026 Giants.

Yeah, it was a well-pitched ball game by both clubs, obviously Webb and Melton.

The, the Tigers threw the first punch in the sixth inning.

The Giants answered back in the seventh to tie the game up, both pitching tremendously, and then it came down to the 10th inning.

It was lax execution ac- in a couple different innings for the Giants and missed opportunities there.

They out-hit the Tigers, but they just got one, hit with runners in scoring position.

Yeah.

So, you know, when you strike out your last six, when y- when your last- six batters to strike out, and the guy before that hits into a double play, i- it’s tough to win close ball games.

And, and the Tigers, you know, that’s w- how they’re built right now.

They’re built, they pitch well- Yep and they find a way to get guys on base.

They put the pressure on you, and then they, they get that big hit when they need it, and that’s why they’ve been one of the best, best records in the big league since- Yep since July.

Them and the Red Sox have been one, two in, in, in records.

So, you’re wondering how they do it?

Right.

Well, well, that’s how they do it.

They, they pitch.

No Scubal, no Casey Mize, no problem for the Tigers as they walk into Oracle Park and take the series.

As you mentioned, Sean, the Giants one for nine with runners in scoring position, but today’s Toyota Play of the Game, it’s the top of the 10th inning, and what you’re talking about, a lack of execution.

How about how you lead?

What an at bat this was.

Here’s Hentges, he goes to right field.

Lee to Lee, and the Tigers take the lead two to one.

Yeah, you’re talking about execution.

I mean, he didn’t hit the ball hard.

He got fisted.

Little bit of bad luck for Hentges, right over first base.

You see right there, he executes his pitch to perfection, and then Lee just does a nice job of putting the ball in play, and good things happen.

And then once again with Torkelson right here.

Executes a pitch- Yep just flares it over Basabe’s head in center field, and then, you know, it’s first and third, and they already have a run scored.

So, you know, great job of putting the bat on the ball for the Tigers.

Good things happen in that inning, and then they have a two-run lead.

Kevin Clark hits a fielder’s choice here.

Adames fails to get the double play.

Maybe he was thinking about going home, but the Tigers take a three to one lead.

That’s all they would need.

How about it had to feel good for Torkelson, the local kid, Spencer Torkelson from Petaluma, coming up with that big hit to center field there.

But Lee, execution at a six-pitch at bat, that won the game.

Winning those little battles there against Hentges.

He was battling, battling, battling, but Lee comes through with the game-winning hit.

Yeah, and if you don’t score the second run, so the hard ball to hit to, to, to Willie, you know, he doesn’t handle it.

But has he, does he If he does handle it, he probably throws, Lee out at home, ’cause Lee was going on contact right there.

And then maybe they only score one run.

So it’s just kind of the, the little things that don’t really show up in the box score that win and lose you ball games.

Yep.

Wasn’t a great game defensively for the Giants today, after we saw a really good game defensively in game one.

We didn’t see a great game yesterday as well.

And, and so when that happens, you know, that’s how you, that’s how you lose close games.

You know, Logan Webb did his best to, to help his team- Yep win the game.

Pitched a g- once again, pitched well after a team loss.

Yeah.

But the team was only, is six and six now- Now, yep in those games that he’s pitched after losses, and his ERA is in the ones.

Yeah, 1.9 or something like that there.

Yeah.

We’ll get to Logan Webb in just a second.

You talk about missed opportunities, the bottom of the eighth inning, the Giants are cooking here.

A chance to give Logan Webb the win, which would’ve been his eighth of the season.

Cristhian Castillo leads things off with a single to center field, and then what do you know?

Leadoff hitter’s on.

And then Bryce Eldridge, who has had his struggles, he comes up next with an infield single.

And Sean, there’s first, runners on first and second, no outs, and you got the big boys coming up, Jung-hoo Lee, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers.

And we know how this story ends.

Devers hits into a inning-ending double play.

Bases loaded, one out.

That was the last great chance for the Giants here to make something happen against Detroit.

Yeah, their biggest opportunity in the game, because they had the right guys up.

But Summers, the lefty’s funky.

They had that Lee and Devers, you know, the lefties coming up.

Adames gets the walk there.

But that to me was the big inning of the game.

Yep.

You have first and second, you have a chance to, to bunt them over.

Lee doesn’t get the bunt down.

Doesn’t execute the bunt, right?

Yeah.

So you t- look at lack of execution right there.

Tough guy to bunt in Summers, especially lefty on left, with him dropping down that low three-quarter angle.

Mm-hmm.

But you gotta will yourself into, you gotta will yourself in those situations to get that bunt down a- a- and get those runners over with a chance for Willy Adames coming up, the righty behind him.

A- and they just weren’t able to do it.
