Update 42.1 changed Blue Zone damage to time-based, the longer you stay in it, the harder it hits.

I've been collecting telemetry from Season 42 matches and wanted to see how the changes actually affected gameplay.

Dataset

  • 🎮 4,900+ matches
  • 👥 425,000+ player records
  • 📊 15 million+ telemetry events

Disclosure: I built PUBG.ARMY, the free tracker this data comes from. The full interactive report (heatmaps, animations, and charts) is linked at the end.

Key findings

The Blue Zone is now one of the biggest threats in PUBG

The Blue Zone accounts for ~20% of all recorded damage.

For comparison, the highest-damage weapon (the AUG) accounts for only 7.6%.

No individual weapon comes close.

There is no "sweet spot" for playing in the Blue

After correcting for survivorship bias (solo matches, endgame survivors only), win rates steadily decline as Blue Zone exposure increases.

Time spent in Blue Win Rate
Under 1 minute 7.2%
1–5 minutes 5.7%
5+ minutes 4.8%

More time in the Blue consistently means a lower chance of winning.

💀 Nearly 6% of eliminations have no killer

5.8% of all eliminations aren't credited to another player.

These include:

  • Blue Zone
  • Drowning
  • Falls

By the 19-minute mark, roughly 1 in every 5 deaths during that minute has no killer.

🌊 Water final circles are surprisingly common

About 1 in 12 final circles finish mostly over water.

By map:

Map Water Finals
Erangel 14.1% (1 in 7)
Taego 6.6%
Deston 5.2%

This lines up with Krafton's Season 42 notes about reducing aggressive zone centering.

A staged boat is becoming a legitimate rotation tool rather than just a meme.

Other interesting stats

  • Half the lobby is dead by 10 minutes.
  • 67% of players never spend a single second in the Blue Zone because they die before the late-game circles.
  • Around 9% of gun kills are made by shooters who are standing inside the Blue Zone.
  • Miramar players spend the longest in the Blue, averaging 65 seconds per match.
  • Early circles shift roughly 1,500 meters, while late circles move very little.

Craziest match

TJ21777.

Spent 777 seconds inside the Blue Zone on Erangel…

…and still won with their squad.

The data strongly suggests you shouldn't try to copy that strategy.

Methodology

  • Season 42 matches collected through PUBG.ARMY.
  • Statistics update hourly, so values may change slightly over time.
  • Telemetry records the shooter's position when a kill occurs, not the victim's.
  • "No killer" eliminations include Blue Zone, drowning, and falls.
  • Water final circles are defined as circles with 50% or more of their area over water, calculated using per-map water masks.
