Godot Engine 4.7 was released yesterday with a long list of changes to explore. Contributors to the free and open-source engine call it the “4.7 Director’s Cut” – aimed at giving devs the best tools for realizing their creative vision. Earlier patches were much more stability-focused in comparison. 4.7 includes improved HDR & lighting, support for Valve’s Steam Frame, and much more.

If you’re unfamiliar with Godot, the engine powers a notable list of indie hits – Brotato, Dome Keeper, and Cruelty Squad are perhaps the most well-known. On the VR side of things, there is the Godot XR framework, led by Bastiaan Olij. Earlier this year, Olij complimented the Steam Frame (devkit), praising it for game dev in particular, saying, “I wish more headsets were like this”.

Day one support for Steam Frame and Android XR

Godot supports 2D and 3D games, and is an engine that is predominantly used for ‘flatscreen’ titles rather than VR. Nonetheless, support is there via Godot XR, which provides the tools for building virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality content. Godot XR is built upon the OpenXR standard and introduces built-in mechanics such as teleportation, grab mechanics, and more.

As seen above, there will be “Day one support for the latest XR platforms,” with Steam Frame and Android XR mentioned. The team behind the engine says Godot 4.7 is “production-ready” for Valve’s upcoming VR headset. It’s worth noting that the Frame features a Snapdragon chip that’s ideal for Android gaming – in fact, VRChat devs have already uploaded an Android version of the game to Steam servers, which is likely to run smoothly for the Frame in standalone mode.

While it was originally planned for an early 2026 release, the Steam Frame (alongside the Steam Machine) has been pushed back due to memory and storage shortages. Valve has now officially announced a summer release window for both devices, and the Steam Frame Welcome Tour even leaked earlier this month – suggesting that we’re incredibly close to launch.
