Inclement weather in Ohio on Wednesday caused the second game of the six-game series between the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and Columbus Clippers to be postponed.
It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Friday starting at 5:30 p.m. at Huntington Park. The teams are scheduled to play Thursday at 12:05 p.m.
The RailRiders took the opening game of the series Tuesday night, 3-1, behind the pitching of Brendan Beck and the offense of Jonathan Ornelas and Tyler Hardman. Both players had two hits, while Beck matched his career high with nine strikeouts in six innings.
Ornelas is batting .324 (57 for 176), which ranks third in the International League. In 54 games, he has 11 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 22 RBIS and 31 runs.
Beck’s nine strikeouts Tuesday give him a league-high 81, which is three more than teammate Carlos Lagrange and Nestor German of the Norfolk Tides. Beck also tops the league in innings pitched (75.1), earned-run average (3.23) and is tied for the lead in wins (6) with Columbus’ Trenton Denholm and Memphis Redbirds reliever Luis Gastelum.
This is the final series of the first half for the RailRiders (35-34). They begin second-half play with a series at the Indianapolis Indians on June 23-28. Their next homestand at PNC Field is June 30-July 5 against the Norfolk Tides.
Outfielder Cole Gabrielson was promoted from Double-A Somerset to the RailRiders on Wednesday.
Gabrielson started the season with High-A Hudson Valley and batted .256 (20 for 78) in 33 games with four doubles, one home run, five RBIs, 18 runs and 10 stolen bases. He was promoted to Somerset on June 3 and in 11 games with the Patriots, he batted .289 (11 for 38) with one double, two home runs, three RBIs, seven runs and two stolen bases.
