Ng Wai Han has been appointed by the State Council as the new Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macau SAR upon nomination by Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.

An executive order by the Chief Executive has also been published in the SAR Official Gazette on Monday.

Ng Wai Han has been serving as director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau since May 2025.

She previously served as Director of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau (SAFP) from September 2023, following a three-year stint as Deputy Director. Between 1999 and 2020, Ng rose through the ranks of the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), eventually reaching the position of Deputy Director.

Born in Macau in 1976, Ng earned both her bachelor’s degree in law and her master’s in criminal law from Guangzhou’s Sun Yat-sen University.

The position of Secretary for Economy and Finance had been vacant since 16 April, following Tai Kin Ip’s resignation.

Tai stepped down just 16 months after taking office, and was formally removed from his post by the State Council after submitting his resignation for “personal reasons”, the government indicated.

He was appointed as a member of the Macau International Airport Company’s (CAM) Board of Directors and Executive Committee earlier this month.
