The NFL schedule is officially out, and the Detroit Lions once again find themselves in the national spotlight. Detroit not only has one of the league’s easier schedules on paper based on last season’s win percentages, but the Lions will also play in four true primetime games during the 2026 season. Detroit is scheduled for two appearances on Sunday Night Football, one on Thursday Night Football and one on Monday Night Football.

The Lions will also have two additional standalone showcase games with their annual Thanksgiving matchup at Ford Field and an international game in Germany. While those games are not technically considered primetime contests, they will still draw massive national audiences as Detroit continues to establish itself as one of the NFL’s marquee teams.

Week 2: Thursday Night Football — Lions at Bills

Detroit’s first primetime game comes early in the season with a massive road test against the Buffalo Bills. The matchup features two teams expected to compete for a Super Bowl and could quickly become one of the most watched games of the early NFL season.

The Bills remain one of the AFC’s top contenders behind quarterback Josh Allen, and playing in Buffalo on a short week is never easy. The Lions, however, will have an opportunity to prove they belong among the NFL’s elite teams on a national stage. Detroit’s offense against Buffalo’s aggressive defense should make for one of the better quarterback battles and offensive showcases of the season.

Week 4: Sunday Night Football — Lions at Panthers

Detroit’s first Sunday Night Football appearance of the year comes on the road against the Carolina Panthers. On paper, this is one of the more favorable matchups on the Lions’ schedule, but primetime road games can always present challenges regardless of the opponent.

The Panthers are still trying to establish consistency as a franchise, while the Lions enter the season with expectations of competing near the top of the NFC. Detroit’s explosive offense could create matchup problems for Carolina throughout the night, especially if the Lions offensive line controls the pace of the game.

This game also gives Detroit another opportunity to showcase itself nationally after years of limited primetime exposure before the franchise’s recent turnaround.

Week 15: Sunday Night Football — Lions at Vikings

The most important primetime game on the schedule could arrive late in the season when Detroit travels to face the Minnesota Vikings in a critical NFC North showdown.

By December, playoff seeding and potentially the division title could be on the line. Road games inside the division are always difficult, especially in primetime environments, and Minnesota remains one of Detroit’s biggest challengers within the NFC North.

The Lions will likely need this game if they hope to secure home-field advantage or maintain control of the division late in the year. The atmosphere inside Minnesota is expected to be intense with postseason implications surrounding both teams.

Week 16: Monday Night Football — Lions vs. Giants

Detroit closes out its primetime schedule at home against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Ford Field has become one of the loudest environments in the NFL over the last few seasons, and the energy for a December primetime game should be electric.

The Giants continue to rebuild, but late-season games can often become unpredictable. For the Lions, this matchup could serve as one of their final major tests before the postseason begins. Detroit will likely be fighting for playoff positioning, making this nationally televised home game even more important.

Monday Night Football games always carry a different atmosphere, and the Lions will once again have the chance to perform in front of a national audience during one of the NFL’s premier television windows.

* Date: Monday, Dec. 21

* Time: 8:15 p.m. ET

* Where to watch: ESPN and ABC

Overall, the 2026 schedule continues to show how far the Lions franchise has come. Detroit is no longer viewed as an afterthought around the league. Between multiple primetime appearances, holiday games and an international showcase, the NFL clearly sees the Lions as one of its premier attractions entering the season.
