WRGB Studios-Schenectady, NY — New Yorkers have until next Friday, May 15th, to weigh in on new guardrails and regulations regarding sports wagering.

One of the draft regulations includes “Rulemaking for Underage Play Prevention”, while another includes measures for “Rulemaking for Responsible Gaming”.

“Mobile sports wagering is everywhere, enticing everyone — including our youth — to place bets without fully considering the consequences,” Governor Hochul said as the State rolled out these proposals. “We need strong regulatory safeguards to prevent those under 21 from gambling, keep artificial intelligence from preying on gamblers, and require sports wagering operators take real action if one of their customers is showing signs of gambling harm. I’m thankful to the Gaming Commission for putting forth comprehensive measures that achieve these goals and protect New Yorkers. As a reminder: Only legal, regulated gaming have such safeguards in place.”

The State is looking for feedback from the sports wagering industry, responsible gaming advocates, problem gambling treatment professionals, parent-teacher organizations, schools, religious organizations and more.

CBS6 spoke with Joe Maloney, president of the Sports Betting Alliance with their perspective on the proposals.

“Some of the proposed regulations are truly a solution in search of a problem,” Maloney said. “They’re creating additional potential restrictions on operators that are [already] largely compliant by and large, and do everything possible to keep those [restrictions] under the age of 21. The biggest focus we would suggest for some of the regulatory community in the state of New York and stakeholders in Albany would be to ensure that illegal and unregulated operators are no longer able to access have access to New York residents, and there are many ways to do that, in partnership with the federal government, but those are the entities and the operators that are targeting young people.”
