PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – The Portland Trail Blazers suffered a stunning 114-93 blowout defeat in Game 4 of their playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, despite holding a 17-point lead at halftime.
The Blazers entered Sunday’s matinee seeking redemption just two nights after blowing a 15-point, second-half lead in Game 3 – a 120-108 loss to give the Spurs the series lead after the teams split the first two games.
Meanwhile, buoyed by the return of star Victor Wembanyama – who missed Game 3 with a concussion – the Spurs looked to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series headed back to San Antonio.
In the end, it was deja vu in Portland, as the Blazers collapsed once again to put themselves on the brink of elimination after a shocking shift in momentum in the second half.
After a closely contested opening frame, Portland’s offense exploded in the second quarter – outscoring the Spurs 33-18 to take a 17-point lead into halftime.
The lead all but evaporated just four minutes into the third quarter, as the Spurs opened the second half on a 13-0 run to pull within four.
Portland’s defense couldn’t stop the bleeding, as Devin Vassell hit back-to-back jumpers with about four minutes remaining in the period to give the San Antonio their first lead since the first quarter, while the Blazers went ice-cold on offense.
The teams entered the fourth and final frame deadlocked 74-74, but the Spurs’ run carried over the break, as they opened up a double-digit lead by the eight-minute mark.
The floodgates opened from there, as San Antonio outscored Portland 73-35 in the second half for a runaway victory.
Emotions ran high toward the end of the game, as a shoving match between Deni Avdjia and San Antonio’s Stephon Castle in the closing minutes led to offsetting technical fouls.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday in San Antonio. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with the Blazers needing a victory to keep their season alive and force a Game 6 in Portland.
