MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Beginning its eight-game road swing with the final of four straight contests against squads from the Lowcountry, USC Upstate baseball dropped its midweek contest to College of Charleston 6-0 Tuesday at the Ballpark at Patriots Point.

Making his third start of the season, senior right-handed pitcher Reece Hemmerling turned in his longest outing as a Spartan, working 5.0 innings while striking out four. He held the Cougars without a hit until the third inning and faced just one batter over the minimum through his first 4.0 innings of work.

Working out of the bullpen, junior righty Wyatt Land notched his second straight scoreless outing, the fifth of his campaign. Entering with two runners on and one out in the eighth, he struck out the lone two hitters he faced.

Three Spartans closed the evening with multi-hit affairs as redshirt senior Jake Armsey, senior catcher Preston Lucas, and redshirt senior Alex Ritzer each collected two hits apiece.

How It Happened

B5: Striking first, College of Charleston scratched three in the fifth behind three hits and an Upstate error. A Braeden Smith single through the right side to push across the first tally. A ground-rule double from Reece Holbrook plated the second before a groundout from Jacob Amman brought home the final tally.
B7: Adding two runs to the Cougars’ lead, Will Tippett cranked a two-run homer down the leftfield line.
B8: Tacking on the final run of the night, College of Charleston scored behind a Landon Penfield single back through the middle.

Notable

Ripping a single through the right side in his first at-bat, Trey Bentley extended his team-best reached base streak to 18 games. Doing so with a hit, he extended his hitting streak to seven games, tied for the second-longest active streak on the club with Wylie Waters. Preston Lucas leads the squad with an active nine-game hitting streak—extended Tuesday.
