DICKINSON, N.D. – Valley City State and Dickinson State are playing their four-game series in Dickinson this weekend. The series was scheduled to be played in Valley City, but unplayable field conditions at the VCSU Softball Complex. On Friday, the Blue Hawks swept the Vikings 4-0 and and 9-4.
Valley City State is now 16-15 on the season and 6-4 in the Frontier Conference. The Blue Hawks are 24-12 overall and 12-4 in the conference.
GAME 1: Dickinson State 4, Valley City State 0
In the opener, it was a classic pitcher dual between Maddy Hazelton of Valley City State and Dickinson State’s Hope Fath. Fath retired the first eight batters she faced before walking Avery Kuklinski with two outs in the bottom of the third. The Vikings got their first hit when Kylee Banerd singled to center field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
While Fath was holding then Viking offense at bay, Maddy Hazelton was mowing down the Blue Hawks. After Brooke Lijewski reached on an error with two out in the top of the first, Hazelton would go on to retire the next 13 batters in a row until, that when things started to fall apart for VSU.
Stocktyn Stevenson reached on an infield single. Stevenson moved to second on a passed ball then scored on Celina Wilharm’s line single to left to make it 1-0. With two out and a runner at second, Kiley Hubby singled to center, scoring courtesy runner Izzy Kelly to make it 2-0 Blue Hawks. Jersey Morse then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Dickinson State. Jessa Duggan singled to right, scoring Octavia Meyer to make it 4-0.
Fath did the rest for the Blue Hawks holding the Vikings to just three hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
For Valley City State, Madden Bogenreif was 1 for 3 with a double, Kylee Banerd was 1 for 3, and Jenna Decker was 1 for 3. Hazelton allowed five hits and four earned runs in seven innings. She walked two and struck out ten.
GAME 2: Dickinson State 9, Valley City State 4
In game two, the Blue Hawks used the momentum at the end of game one to get off to a good start in game two. Kiley Hubby singled to right, Celina Wilharm came in to score to make it 2-0. Brooke Lijewski stole home on the front end of a double steal attempt. Hubby was caught trying to steal second. Octavia Meyer scored on a single by Jaydin Sabol to make it 3-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Vikings finally dented the scoreboard. With one out, Madden Bogenreif singled to center then on a 1-1 pitch, Kennadi Stone hit a home run over the left field fence, her fourth homer of the season, to make it 3-2 Blue Hawks.
In the top of the third, Meyer singled to center, scoring Hubby to make it 4-2 Blue Hawks.
Valley City State in the bottom of the third. Pascale Kihn and Madden Bogenreif hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning, cutting the Blue Hawk lead to 4-3. After a double by Stone and walk to Kylee Banerd loaded the bases, Jenna Decker singled to left, scoring Bogenreif to tie the game at 4-4 and reload the bases. Reliever Reagan King would strike out the last two hitters to end the threat and keep the game tied at 4 after three innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Blue Hawks took the lead. With runners at first and second and no one out, Wilharm bunted the ball down the third base line. Viking third baseman, Katelyn MacNeill’s throw to first was low and went down the right field line. Viennah Meyer and Stocktyn Stevenson scored to make it 6-4. Hubby reached on a bunt single, Wilharm scored to make it 7-4. With runners at second and third, Jaydin Sabol doubled to the gap in right center field, scoring two runs to make it 9-4 Dickinson State.
The Vikings got a runner on in the bottom of the seventh but could not get a run across to make the final 9-4.
Madden Bogenreif led the Viking offense by going 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Kennadi Stone was 2 for 4 with a home run, and two RBI. Jenna Decker was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Pascale Kihn was 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Cooper Klaashen took the loss, giving up eleven hits and six earned runs in six innings. She walked one and struck out four.
UP NEXT: The two teams continue this series in Dickinson on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is slated to start at 12:30pm with game two to follow at 2:30 pm.
