GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team had a five-run seventh inning to defeat in-state foe Charlotte on Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium, 7-6, as freshman Avery Bouquin hit the game-winning double.

The Spartans improve to 28-14 overall, while the 49ers fall to 22-19 overall.

Rhyann Jones, in the circle for the Spartans, retired the first three Charlotte batters in the top of the first.
UNCG then began the bottom of the frame with a leadoff walk from Kaylyn Belfield who then advanced to second on an infield single by Macy Michael.
Nya South picked the second pitch of her at-bat to drive out to left center for a two-run double, giving UNCG a 2-0 advantage.
The 49ers threatened with two runners in scoring position in the top of the second, but Jones struck out the side keeping Charlotte at bay.
With two outs and no one on base in the top of the third, Charlotte’s London Dirks was hit by a pitch to reach base and then stole second base before Jenna Lord crushed a two-run homer over the right field wall to tie the game, 2-2.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Charlotte scored two runs on one hit and one error taking the 4-2 lead.
The 49ers tacked on another two runs in the top of the sixth on a defensive miscue for a 6-2 cushion.
The Spartans then strung together two hits and one error, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
With the bases loaded and one out, Michael reached on a fielder’s choice and all runners were safe as Charlotte’s shortstop committed an error, cutting the deficit to three, 6-3.
South walked with the bases loaded, giving UNCG another run for a 6-4 deficit.
Laney Deane grounded out to second base for the second out of the inning, but Belfield crossed home plate for a one-run difference, 6-5.
Bouquin then cranked a ball off the wall in left center, scoring two runs for a game-winning double, giving UNCG a 7-6 victory.
Bouquin went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while Hadley Gardner swung 2-for-3 at the plate as the only other Spartan with multiple hits.
South went 1-for-3 with a game-best three RBI, a double and a walk.
